Chandigarh, June 2: Leading Punjabi film actor and singer Gippy Grewal on Friday got an extortion call from gangster Dilpreet Dhahan. Dhahan is on the run after he took the responsibility of opening fire at another Punjabi singer Parmish Verma on April 14 when the latter was returning to his residence in Mohali from Chandigarh.
Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kuldeep Singh Chahal said: “We have registered a case against Dilpreet Dhahan at Mohali’s Phase 8 police station after Gippy informed us that he received an extortion call from him.”
Gippy, who is presently promoting his new movie “Carry on Jatta 2” across Punjab, is a resident of Mohali and has been part of many hit Punjabi movies including “Ardaas”, “Manje Bistre”, “Subedaar Joginder Singh” and “Jihne Mera Dil Luteya”.
The gangster has threatened Gippy that he will meet the same fate as Parmish if he fails to meet his demand, the singer-actor told the police demanding security cover.
The gangster had made a WhatsApp call to Gippy, said the police.
More than six singers of the Punjabi music fraternity, who are in demand for live events and concerts, are the prime targets of gangsters. Many have even complied with the extortion demand.
Besides Dhahan, Sampat Nehra of Lawrence Bishnoi gang has also made extortion calls to leading chemist in Chandigarh.
