Gidderpindi, May 31: Imagine a school where 80 out of 80 students failed the PSEB Class X examination. Termed as one of the worst state schools, it is none other than Government Senior Secondary School in Gidderpindi.
There are problems such as staff crunch, poor infrastructure, unkempt classrooms and what not.
The principal, who joined the school in January this year, was welcomed by rakish students, slushy playgrounds and a computer lab having papers all around.
Putting the house in order was not a cakewalk for the principal. He said of the 29 sanctioned posts of teacher, only five had been filled.
The principal, earlier this year, had taken up the issue of staff shortage with the Secretary, Education, but he was told that he was sent there to take care of the issues.
The school doesn’t have maths and science teachers. The strange thing is that a Punjabi teacher is teaching science and maths to students of Classes X and XII.
There are two Hindi teachers, one Punjabi teacher, two social studies teachers, one teacher for wellness and agriculture.
To make matters worse, one computer teacher was put on election duty, while the other is sent to Government Middle School, Daruwal, twice a week. The PTI has been on medical leave since December 2017.
The principal said: “Without staff we can’t even teach children. Punjabi teacher is teaching subjects she isn’t even qualified for.”
