The accused has been identified as Gagandeep Singh (32), who is an advocate in Mohali.
The police said a woman, a resident of Banur, was admitted to the hospital on May 31. Her in-laws had told her family that she had met with an accident.

The woman’s uncle, Kirpal Singh, said the entire family had come to the hospital to meet her. “Her in-laws had claimed that she met with an accident while riding pillion on a motorcycle. However, we doubt their theory,” Kirpal Singh said.

Sources said the woman’s family had an altercation with her in-laws in the hospital parking following which Gagandeep, who is known to the woman’s in-laws, opened fire into the air. It was alleged that before he could fire again, the girl’s family overpowered him and informed the police.

Police teams rushed to the spot and arrested him.

The police said Gagandeep, in his statement, alleged that the woman’s family tried to thrash him following which he rushed towards his car and fired into the air in self-defence. The sources said the weapon was not licensed.

The police have registered a case under Section 336 (act endangering the life and personal safety of others) of the IPC and under Sections 25, 27 and 59 of the Arms Act against the accused at the Sector 34 police station.

The sources said there was a dispute between both families and the matter was under investigation at the Banur police station.
