Police constable shoots self dead at Republic Day function in Jagraon

Ludhiana, January 26: A constable deputed as the gunman of Jagraon City police station SHO reportedly shot himself dead during Republic Day celebrations in Jagraon on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Head Constable Manjit Ram (45), who was deployed as the gunman of SHO Inderjit Singh Boparai.

Manjit Ram was a resident of Beer village near Mehatpur in Jalandhar district. He was posted as the gunman of the SHO for the past many years. The victim is survived by his wife, two sons and elderly mother. The reason behind why took this extreme step is not clear yet.

According to sources, Manjit Ram shot himself in the chest with his official AK-47 gun at around 10.30 am when the Republic Day parade was underway at Government Senior Secondary School Jagraon.

The cops immediately rushed him to Civil Hospital Jagraon where he was declared brought dead by the doctors. The elderly mother of Manjit Ram and his wife were inconsolable.

The police handed over the body of the victim cop to his family members after conducting a post-mortem. SHO Inderjit Singh Boparai said the police have been investigating the incident to establish the cause behind death of Manjit Ram.“There was no reason that Manjit shot himself dead. He was a happy man,” he said.
