Sangrur, November 6, 2022: To provide a hygienic environment to the people living in the rural areas of Sangrur district, the ponds located in the villages will be transformed soon into cleaner water bodies.
While divulging details, Deputy Commissioner Sangrur Jitendra Jorwal said that the district administration has prepared a project worth Rs. 16.78 crore, with which the ponds of 44 villages will be renovated.
He added that the physical process under this project has also been started in three villages including Anandana, Gujran and Kanjhla.
Deputy Commissioner said that Sangrur has already acquired the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and now the activities were being undertaken on a large scale to get the ODF plus ranking.
He said that under these activities, this project has been prepared for the cleaning of village ponds by using funds from the Swachh Bharat Mission Rural, MGNREGA, Rural Development and Panchayat Department and the 15th Finance Commission as per the instructions of the government.
Jitendra Jorwal said that following the instructions of Chief Minister Punjab Bhagwant Maan, continuous efforts were being made by the district administration to raise the standard of living of the people living in the villages and cleanliness was also being ensured along with other necessary facilities.
He said that the reconstruction of the ponds was being done under the Thapar model and the treated water would be used for agriculture as well as for allied activities like fish farming. He said that after the renovation, the district administration will also ensure plantation around the ponds to make the surroundings greener.
Deputy Commissioner said that apart from awareness activities under Swachh Bharat Mission Rural, funds were also being made available for liquid and solid waste management.
He said that under the Swachh Bharat Mission Rural, there was a provision to release funds of Rs 660 per person for liquid waste management to villages with a population of more than 5,000 and Rs 280 per person to villages with a population of less than 5000. He said that the district administration ensures that the funds of Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin were being used in a fair and transparent manner.
