Post or no post, will stand by Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, says Navjot Sidhu

Date:

Chandigarh, October 2

Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had abruptly resigned as the Punjab Congress chief, on Saturday said he would remain firm on his earlier stand but also promised to stand by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi “post or no post”—a development comes as the Punjab Congress unit roils a few months away from assembly elections.

Sidhu took to Twitter on Gandhi Jayanti in a post that remained silent on whether he would take back the state unit mantle that he’d given up earlier this week, thrusting the party back into a new crisis.

Sidhu said in a tweet on Saturday: “Will uphold principles of Gandhi Ji & Shastri Ji … Post or No Post will stand by @RahulGandhi & @priyankagandhi! Let all negative forces try to defeat me, but with every ounce of positive energy will make Punjab win, Punjabiyat (Universal Brotherhood) win & every Punjabi win!!”.

His tweet comes at a time when the Congress leadership appears to be keen on retaining him as party chief despite voices of resistance from some sections of the party. Sidhu resigned as Punjab Congress chief—a position he’d fought hard for earlier this year, battling then chief minister Amarinder Singh, who has since stepped down from his own position—on Wednesday citing his objections to certain recent political appointments.

Sidhu took over as Punjab Congress chief in June despite strong objections from his political rival Capt Amarinder Singh, with whom he has a history of power struggle. Capt Amarinder has since resigned as chief minister.
