Chandigarh: A delegation of the Independent Poultry Association met state Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal and urged him to save broiler farmers, who are being fleeced by “pseudo contract farming companies”.
Jagdeep Singh of the association said the contract farming companies were allegedly abusing its dominant position in chick production, forcing farmers to buy chicks from it or its franchises at inflated rates. They never supplied copy of the contract to the farmer throughout Punjab.
Any loss due to adverse climatic conditions, diseases or natural calamities was forced upon contracted farmers. The association said companies remain non-committed towards utilisation of full capacity, frequency of replacement or sales weight, therefore farmers lose money due to lack of compensation for fixed costs for unused capacity or period.
