Fatehgarh Sahib, April 17: The SGPC on Monday cancelled the transfer of Dr Kashmir Singh, Principal of Mata Gujri College, after a protest by the staff and students.
The move came a couple of days after The Tribune report (‘College under lens for hiring 70 sans SGPC nod’, April 14), which had highlighted the irregularities allegedly committed during the tenure of the previous Principal, Dr Jatinder Singh Sidhu.
The protesters were joined by representatives of the AAP, district Bar Association, religious and social organisations, besides SGPC member Karnail Singh Panjoli.
The students and the staff accused Dr Sidhu, currently Director, Education, SGPC, of embezzling college funds. They alleged that Dr Kashmir Singh was being made a scapegoat for the wrongdoings of his predecessor.
The district police called up SGPC chief Gobind Singh Longowal and asked him to resolve the issue. Subsequently, SGPC chief secretary Roop Singh issued a written order cancelling the transfer with immediate effect.
Addressing the protesters, Dr Bikramjit Singh Sandhu, president of the Teachers’ Union, demanded a CBI inquiry into the irregularities committed when Dr Sidhu was the Principal of the SGPC-run college.
Panjoli urged the SGPC president to remove Dr Sidhu from the post of Director, Education, and set up a committee to probe the anomalies.
