Chandigarh, February 13: Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday okayed the release of Rs 2.20 crore for the upkeep and management of cattle pounds (gaushalas) being run under the aegis of the Deputy Commissioners of the districts.
The move was aimed at curbing the menace of stray cattle across the state. Rs 10 lakh had been sanctioned by the Chief Minister for each of the 22 gaushalas in the state. The step would go a long way in checking accidents caused by stray cattle, often resulting in loss of human lives or incapacitation of people due to grievous injuries.
A four-member committee, comprising Additional Chief Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Principal Secretary, Local Government, and Principal Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayats, under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary was constituted by the Chief Minister to work out a sustainable system for running these cattle pounds in a result-oriented and efficacious manner.
