Chandigarh, February 21: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has deputed Local Government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu to join Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to receive Justin Trudeau at the Amritsar airport today ahead of his one-to-one meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister.

Following up on his directions to the state administration to roll out the red carpet for the visiting dignitary, the Chief Minister has asked Sidhu to accompany the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs to welcome Trudeau at the airport and also to the Sri Darbar Sahib.

Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar Gurjeet Singh Aujla would also accompany Sidhu later during the Canadian Prime Minister’s visit to the Partition Museum, according to an official spokesperson, who said the Chief Minister had instructed the officials to ensure that all arrangements are in place to welcome Trudeau and his entourage.

The spokesperson further disclosed that Sidhu would be accompanied by the Commissioner of Police S.S. Srivastva and the Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha.

The highlight of Trudeau’s visit to Amritsar is his meeting with the Chief Minister after his visit to Darbar Sahib and Partition Museum. The two leaders are expected to discuss a host of issues of mutual concern with the aim of further strengthening the close business and people-to-people relations between the two countries.

Captain Amarinder has already expressed the hope that his meeting with Trudeau would help strengthen the bilateral relations between Canada and India, particularly in the context of Punjab, which has a large diaspora in Canada. While trade and business will be the key focus area of the meeting, the two leaders are also expected to discuss steps to intensify the close relations between the people of the two countries.
