2 student leaders held for aiding jailbreak accused

Date:

Patiala, October 31: The intelligence wing’s Organised Crime Control Unit (OCCU) and the Patiala police yesterday arrested two student leaders for allegedly supplying drugs and weapons to jailed gangsters.

They are Harman Virk Samana, former president, Gandhi Group Student Union (GGSU), and Armaan Cheema, incumbent president of the outfit. The GGSU is active in Panjab University, Chandigarh.

“The two were in touch with Nabha jailbreak accused Neeta Deol and Gurpreet Sekhon, for whom they arranged drugs when ordered,” reads a police report.

The police claimed to have seized two passports, including that of Nabha jailbreak accused Kulwinder Singh and Jasdeep Kaur, and 700 gm of psychotropic powder from them. Sources said Virk and Cheema were under the influence of heroin when they were arrested from near Rajpura.

During interrogation, they reportedly confessed to have supplied “chitta” (drugs) to gangsters lodged in Kapurthala and Patiala jails. “Money was transferred to their accounts from Hong Kong and other countries. And the two would then arrange for weapons and drugs for gangsters,” the police said.

The role of jail officials is under the scanner as drugs would be smuggled inside the prisons in bulbs, pillows and other items. Sources said the student leaders had revealed how they helped gangsters stay on university campuses in Chandigarh and Punjab, and in flats rented by them across the state.

Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Harinder Virk said the duo would be grilled further to ascertain their involvement in other crimes and links with other gangsters.

Meanwhile, Vicky Middukhera, Chandigarh president of Students Organisation of India (SOI), said: “It is shocking for us. The criminal elements should be kept away from students’ politics. Leaders have to keep their record clean as students follow them.”
