Patiala, July 31: Cutting across party lines, a number of prominent personalities turned up at the New Moti Bagh Palace on Sunday afternoon to participate in the bhog ceremony of Rajmata Mohinder Kaur, mother Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.
Dignitaries, including former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, Union Minister Vijay Sampla, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, joined Amarinder and his family in paying tributes to Rajmata.
Azad, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, conveyed the condolence message of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi to the bereaved family.
Sampla, while conveying the condolences of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah, said Rajmata was a pious soul and a great social reformer, who was far ahead of her time.
Speaking on the occasion, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and Leader of Opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha Sukhpal Singh Khaira described the CM as a respected statesman, who had resigned from Parliament in protest against Operation Bluestar and then from the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in protest against Operation Black Thunder.
Expressing gratitude to the people for sharing their grief, Amarinder described Rajmata’s demise as not only a personal loss to the family, but also to the region and its people. Her passion to impart quality education to children would always be remembered by one and all, he said.
On the occasion, “antim ardas” was performed by Jathedar Takht Sri Patna Sahib Giani Iqbal Singh. Golden Temple granthi Bhai Kulwinder Singh recited the “hukamnama”.
Religious leaders, state ministers, Congress MLAs and workers, senior administrative and police officers and citizens from various walks of life attended the ceremony.
