Chandigarh, January 19:
Punjab Sports and Youth Services Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, on Tuesday, termed the action taken by Shimla Police to arrest the youngsters of Punjab who were peacefully raising their voices in favour of agitating farmers as an attack on their constitutional rights and democratic fabric of the country. He said that the arrest was made at the behest of BJP Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, who wants to appease their political bosses.
In a statement here, Rana Sodhi said that the Supreme Court of India made it clear that peaceful protest is a democratic right during hearing on the petitions pertaining to farmers’ protest at Delhi, but the beleaguered Himachal Pradesh BJP Government is appeasing Modi Government by adopting unconstitutional tactics.
Strongly condemning the arrest of the peaceful protesting youth, he said that these youngsters have not violated any law and every person has the right to speak, think and act under the Constitution of India.
The Cabinet Minister said that earlier at the behest of the Union Government, the Haryana Government was also taken oppressive steps to stop the farmers but in vain.
Rana Sodhi said that the Union government would have to bow down before the public outrage and the demands of the farmers would have to be met.
