Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who was convicted by a CBI court in a rape case on August 25, has been shifted to the district jail in Rohtak’s Sunariya where he spends a sleepless night from the police training college’s guest house, a make-shift jail.
On Saturday, IG Prisons Jagjeet Singh said, “The dera chief was shifted late night around 9.30 pm after a medical examination.”
Denying media reports of special treatment for the self-styled godman, the IG stressed that Gurmeet Ram Rahim was being treated as any other jail inmate. “He has been kept in a barrack in the jail with two qaidi nambardaars (trusted prisoners) deputed with him.” Director General of Police (Prisons) KP Singh added that the two nambardaars have been deputed for surveillance. He said: “There is no air conditioner in the cell where he is locked; he is also being kept under the surveillance of two prisoners as per the jail manual.”
The officials also denied reports that the dera chief was being given bottled mineral water. “There’s no question of giving him bottled mineral water as all Haryana jails have RO purifier system for inmates,” IG Jagjeet Singh said.
Sources in the prison, meanwhile, said the Dera chief spent a sleepless night. He had milk last night and was given bread in morning for breakfast, they added.
Securitymen have cordoned off area up to three kilometres from the jail, and no one is being allowed to enter the premises. The roadways bus service and train service have been suspended to keep the Dera supporters at bay from Rohtak.
