Date:

Chandigarh, July 13:

Punjab Sports and Youth Services Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, on Tuesday, condoled passing away of Indian cricketer Yashpal Sharma, whose sporting legacy was deeply rooted in Punjab. Sharma (66), a vanguard part of India’s 1983 World Cup winner team and admired for being a gutsy middle-order batsman at the peak of his prowess, died on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest at New Delhi. He was survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

In his condolence message, Rana Sodhi said that he was an explosive middle-order batsman who played during the 70s and 80s. He first drew attention when he scored 260 for Punjab schools against Jammu & Kashmir schools in 1972. Within two years, he was in the state team and a member of the North Zone team that won the Vizzy Trophy. Born and brought up in Ludhiana, Yashpal Sharma was also a national selector during the early part of 2000s. He was represented three teams- Punjab, Haryana, and Railways in Ranji Trophy.

Sharing his heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved family, relatives and friends, Sports Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi prayed to the Almighty to grant courage to bear this irreparable loss in this hour of grief and eternal peace to the departed soul.
