Sangrur, May 18: A 27-year-old woman has accused Mohammad Owais, SAD leader from Malerkotla, of physically exploiting her on the pretext of marriage and submitted a complaint to the Sangrur police.
Owais, who is also an industrialist, has alleged that the woman wants to blackmail him and is therefore levelling a baseless allegation against him. Owais had contested the last Assembly election on a SAD ticket, but had lost to Razia Sultana.
“I came in contact with Owais through some known persons in 2010 when I was looking for a job. He exploited me physically till 2017 on the pretext of marriage. After he refused to marry me, I lodged a complaint.
Now, his musclemen are threatening to kill me and my family if I do not withdraw the complaint,” alleged the victim while speaking to mediapersons at a local hotel. Sources said she had submitted her complaint last week to Sangrur SSP Mandeep Sidhu, who has directed Malerkotla DSP Yogi Raj to conduct an inquiry.
“The police are delaying the FIR registration. I request the higher authorities to take immediate action,” she said.
Repeated attempts to contact Owais proved futile as his mobile phone was switched off.
“Owais never met her. She wants to extort money from him by levelling baseless allegations. We have lodged a complaint with the Ludhiana police against her for trying to blackmail Owais,” said Mohd Unis, Owais’ manager.
The Malerkotla DSP said the police had got a complaint against Owais and were conducting a probe. “There is no delay from our side,” he said.
