New Delhi, August 23: Senior BJP MP Arun Jaitley on Thursday was re-appointed as the Union Finance Minister.
A Rashtrapati Bhawan communique said the President as advised by the Prime Minister had directed that the portfolios of the Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs be assigned to Arun Jaitley.
Jaitley remained a minister without portfolio since he underwent a renal transplant surgery in May this year.
Railways Minister Piyush Goyal was holding the Finance portfolio during Jaitley’s absence at North Block, where the Ministry is located.
The BJP leader remained confined to his home in sterile settings and made a brief appearance in Parliament in the last week of the Monsoon session to vote for the ruling coalition candidate Harivansh as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
During the period he was recuperating from surgery, Jaitley was holding limited interaction with top BJP leaders and Goyal on a more frequent basis.
He remained an active commentator on contemporary issues concerning politics, governance and economic issues often countering the opposition on it.
