SGPC to rewrite history, panel of Sikhs to visit Kala Paani

Date:

Chandigarh, April 23: In view of the distortions about the role of Sikhs, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has planned to rewrite history. Announcing this decision, Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar, President of SGPC said a special panel will be formed by SGPC to put things in perspective. The panel would have young writers with open mind and new ideas, he added.

Prof Badungar, while presiding over a seminar on the ‘Role of the Sikhs in Freedom Struggle”, also announced that SGPC will bring out anthology of all the freedom fighters from Punjab with their brief profiles in general with special reference to their neglect in the narrative of Cellular Jail, Andaman that was known as the Kala Pani.

Commenting on the distortion on the issue of the role Sikhs in the context of Kale Pani, Prof Badungar announced to form a panel to look into it. He said the panel would visit the Cellular Jail and meet the authorities concerned to rectify the distortions. He said Sikhs had not been given due place in the freedom struggle by successive governments and historians.

He spoke at length on the contribution of Bhai Maharaj Singh, who was the first freedom fighter of the country as he started his struggle in 1849. He rejected the thesis of 1857 Mutiny being the first freedom struggle of the country.

He said the contribution of Sikhs starting from the time of Guru Nanak against the rulers was unparalleled and unprecedented. He regretted that the same had not been paid due attention.
