Shots fired at NSUI leader’s cavalcade; 2 guards injured

Tarn Taran, July 4: Unidentified persons reportedly fired gunshots at a vehicle in the cavalcade of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) state president Akshay Sharma on the Khadoor Sahib-Tarn Taran road here on Tuesday. A gunman and a bouncer received minor injuries in the attack.

Sharma was in another vehicle ahead of the SUV on which shots were fired.

A resident of Chehharta area in Amritsar, Sharma is son of Manohar Lal, a local leader considered close to Education Minister Om Parkash Soni.

The injured have been identified as Harjit Singh (21) and bouncer Karanjit Singh (29). The security men with Sharma also opened fire at the assailants, following which they fled.

While Karanjit sustained a shotgun injury in his left arm, Harjit received an injury on his head. Both are said to be out of danger.

The gunshots were fired from a .12-bore gun. The rear glass of the vehicle also got smashed.

Sharma said he was clueless about the assailants and their motive behind the attack. “We could not even see the vehicle let alone noting down its registration number,” he said.

SHO Chander Bhushan said senior officials had been informed about the incident and a case would be registered on the statements of the victims and others who accompanied them.
