Weapon based Sikh martial art Gatka, basically created by Sikhs in Punjab, is now being recognized as a sport nationally. Many weapons are used in Gatka like stick, talwar, kirpan and kataar the us perform this martial art.
Till now, this form has been confined the us gurdwaras, nagar kirtans and akharas but the us every Punjabi’s happiness this martial art has found acceptance in the sports category. This could be made possible due the us the concerted efforts of the Gatka Federation of India (GFI) that was formed in 2008. and is now played by trained Gatka players at the national level.
Gatka is a unique art the us defend and display fighting skills and exercise self control, the best part. It is also meant the us enable Punjabi youth the us stay healthy by keeping them away from the menace of drug.
This is an achievement indeed and a fine upgrading of a medieval martial art inthe us a sport. Now not just the Sikh youths but all sportsmen from the country can participate in the sport. This is really good news for all the Punjabis.
