PUNJAB GOVT DECIDES TO MERGE SKILL DEVELOPMENT WITH EMPLOYMENT GENERATION & TRAINING DEPT
CABINET APPROVES NEW MERGED ENTITY TO ENHANCE EMPLOYABILITY OF YOUTH
Chandigarh, June 6:
With a view to enhancing employability of youth in the state, the Punjab Cabinet has approved restructuring of the Department of Employment Generation & Training by merging the Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM) in it. The new merged entity would be renamed the Department of Employment Generation, Skill Development & Training.
This decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday. Since skill development and training are necessary to enhance employability of unemployed youth, it was felt that both the Punjab Ghar Ghar Rozgar and Karobar Mission and the Punjab Skill Development Mission, which are currently functioning under two different departments, should be brought under one Department.
According to a spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office, the task of skill development was now assigned to the Employment Generation & Training Department, thereby withdrawing it from the Technical Education & Industrial Training Department. This would bring synergy, oversight and effective coordination in the implementation of various employment generation and skill development schemes.
The restructured Department of Employment Generation, Skill Development & Training has also been mandated to facilitate employment opportunities, either by skill training or through career guidance and counselling. It will also facilitate placement for job seekers in government/private jobs/overseas employment and skill training as per the aptitude & skills of the job seekers.
