Jalandhar, March 12: The state government on Sunday cleared the setting up of a regional sports centre of excellence for differently abled persons by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment at Dayalpur village in Zirakpur.
Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu said that though the proposal was pending for the past four years, the state government was not able to allocate land for it due to the presence of a road passing through the land. But as the deadline (March 31) for it was fast approaching, the state government today cleared it.
“We have allotted 10 acres of prime land worth Rs 50 crore at Zirakpur. The centre of excellence will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. It will be based on the Brazilian model of sports promotion,” said Sidhu, adding that the project would be completed within two years.
He said that the centre would produce para-Olympians, faculty, volunteers and technical staff of international repute for the country for the para-Olympics in Paris and Los Angeles in 2024 and 2028, respectively.
