Stubble fire: HC directs Chief Secy to intervene

Date:

Chandigarh, October 25: Less than a fortnight after the Punjab and Haryana High Court made its intent clear to examine the legality of coercive steps against farmers for stubble-burning, Justice Rajan Gupta today asked the Chief Secretary to intervene.

Taking up a petition filed by the BKU and another petitioner, Justice Gupta asked the Chief Secretary to depute a senior-level officer to assist the court in the matter. The direction came after counsel for the petitioner informed the Bench regarding the registration of more than 100 FIRs against the farmers. The case will now come up for further hearing on November 20.
