Success for NRI abandoned bride

Date:

Chandigarh, July 12: An NRI groom, who was declared a proclaimed offender after he fled to New Zealand, abandoning his wife and son, surrendered at the Regional Passport Office here on Tuesday.

He was deported from New Zealand after his wife moved an application and his passport was impounded. Kahlon, a native of Sangrur, was detained as he appeared before officials for re-issue of passport and was handed over to the UT police. The Sangrur police too were informed.

The RPO has a dedicated staff to fast-track deportation applications moved by wives against their NRI spouses. One of the applications was by Kahlon’s wife Davinder Kaur, who hails from Sardulgarh in Sangrur. Kahlon had fled the country, abandoning his wife and son, more than 11 years ago.

The couple’s 10-year-old son looked bewildered by the turn of events. Nishan Singh and Davinder Kaur were married in 2005. The latter fled to Australia in 2008, leaving his infant son and wife behind. He returned the following year and promised to take his family along and even got the marriage registered. However, he again fled to Australia after selling his ancestral property.

He was deported in 2011. In 2014, he got a new passport and this time fled to New Zealand along with his mother. A police case was registered against him and he was subsequently declared a proclaimed offender by courts.
