Chandigarh, March 29: During curfew/lockdown imposed due to COVID-19 epidemic, Sugarfed will provide 20 lakh kgs sugar to the poor. 50 thousand Kgs of sugar have already been supplied.
It was disclosed by Cooperation Minister S. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa in press communiqué released here today.
S. Randhawa said that as per the directions of Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh, all necessary arrangements have been made to provide ration to poor and needy in order to keep people at homes for their safety during the amid crisis of Covid-19.
He said that this responsibility has been assigned to the department of Food Civil Supply and Sugarfed will provide 20 lakh packets of sugar of one kg each for this purpose.
He added that 50 thousand packets have been sent today and remaining will be supplied in the coming days. He said that in order to ensure the availability of this essential commodity, we will keep a check on black marketing.
Chairman of Sugarfed S. Amrik Singh Aliwal said that all the cooperative sugar mills have been given directions to meet the required target. He added that Sugarfed will supply sugar to the authorized retailers on controlled rates.
To ensure the equal distribution of sugar, an authorized sugar retailer will not be given more than one truck of sugar (150 quintals) at a time.
All the precaution measures issued by the Health department are being followed by the organization while supplying the sugar, said Shri Puneet Goyal, M.D., Sugarfed. Sanitizers, masks and gloves are being used keeping in mind social distancing.
He said that retail centres have been opened at all the cooperative sugar mills for the consumers and social distancing is also taken care of.
