Sukhbir seeks probe into player’s murder; IG assures action

Date:

Chandigarh, May 12: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Saturday demanded a judicial probe into the murder of kabaddi sportsperson Lachmi Devi, saying the district police were siding with miscreants at the instance of Congress leaders leading to barbaric acts of violence against small and marginal farmers.

He alleged that the Ferozepur police was acting like stooges of Sports Minister Rana Gurmeet Sodhi and refusing to arrest all accused.

Meanwhile, the family members of the girl lifted the four-day-old dharna late on Saturday evening after Inspector General (Ferozepur Range) Gurinder Singh Dhillon assured them of stringent action against the accused.

The IG said the Guruharsahai Station House Officer Bhupinder Singh had been sent on three-day leave.

He also assured that the treatment of the injured person would be looked after by the Red Cross and a case would be recommended for government job to next of kin of the deceased.

Akali leader Vardev Singh Mann said their party would provide Rs 5 lakh grant to the aggrieved family.

Earlier in the day, the girl’s family had refused to cremate her body and continued their protest in Guruharsahai on Saturday.

Lachmi (24), a college student, was killed during a clash between two warring groups over possession of around two acres at Fatehgarh Gehri village on Tuesday.
