Chandigarh, December 19: Sardani Mohinder Kaur w/o Late S. Sukhjinder Singh former Education Minister Punjab and mother of Sukhpal Singh Khaira Leader of Opposition, MLA Bholath, breathed her last yesterday night at their residence in Chandigarh. Sardarni Mohinder Kaur was 88 years old is survived by six daughters and her son Sukhpal Singh Khaira.
Sardarni Mohinder Kaur was born to Major Jagat Singh and Sardarni Bhagwan Kaur at V. Khera Dona in the erstwhile princely state of Kapurthala in the year 1929. Two of her brothers S. Niranjan Singh Khera and S. Gurbaksh Singh have retired as Brigadier and Colonel of the Indian army, respectively.
After receiving early education, she was married to S. Sukhjinder Singh, who quit as DSP Punjab Police in the year 1972 to join politics and later served the state of Punjab twice as Education Minister.
Although she remained a housewife but was very active socially and also performed her duties politically in the absence of her late husband S. Sukhjinder Singh, who was often detained during Emergency and under National Security Act (NSA) during the turbulent times of Punjab in the 1970s and 1980s. Having great passion for her community and the state of Punjab, Sardarni Mohinder Kaur courted arrest at the Golden Temple Amritsar during the “Dharam-Yudh Morcha” in 1982 along with a jatha of more than 150 ladies. She and her jatha were detained at the District Jail Ludhiana for a few months.
Her cremation will take place today 3 PM at their native village Ramgarh in district Kapurthala. Bhog of Sardarni Mohinder Kaur will be held on 26th of December Tuesday, at village Ramgarh district Kapurthala.
