As many as 16 teachers, including five women, had been sitting on fast unto death since October 7.

The teachers ended their indefinite fast by sipping juice given to them by their parents on Thursday evening. However, teachers said they had ended the fast, but their indefinite strike would continue.

As per the sources, the decision to end the fast was taken on the insistence of two teachers’ unions — Adarsh Model School Karamchari Association, Punjab, and SSA/RMSA Teacher Union. Other unions were, reportedly, against the decision of ending the fast. In fact, other unions had to fall in the line as all the 16 teachers, who were on hunger strike, were associated with the unions who were in favour of ending the fast.
