Two awards are given annually on or around International Volunteer Day, December 5, in three categories of Youth (up to 24 years old), Adult and Senior. It is given if they exemplify the spirit of community service; demonstrate exemplary initiative, leadership and creativity in their service to others, serve as a role model for others in their community, inspire others to engage in volunteer service or improve the overall quality of life of fellow Albertans and community as a whole.

The Breaking Barriers category recognizes exceptional volunteers who are working to create communities that are diverse and inclusive.

Three awards are being presented to individuals who volunteered in addressing racism, advocating for LGBTQ2S+ inclusion and fighting gender discrimination.
