Ukrainian model enters Punjabi cinema

Date:

It’s a classic case of passion overriding professional pursuits. For Ukrainian national Tetiana Kapranova (Tanya), a doctor (endocrinologist), modelling and acting happened by luck.

FROM DOCTOR TO ACTOR

I was a medicine student and did my MBBS. For work I used to travel to Russia, China and Dubai. One day while I was completing my assignment, I got an opportunity from someone who insisted that I do a ramp walk assignment. I did it and it earned me accolades. There was no looking back thereafter. My profession changed and instead of being in a white coat in the hospital, I was wearing glamorous outfits.

BALANCING PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE

My husband has been very supportive. He is American-Indian and is generally busy with work, but we create a balance. After my marriage in 2011, I was essaying the role of a wife only. Then in 2014 when I permanently shifted to India, I started to explore regional as well as Indian cinema. Being a Ukrainian with Russian father, we have grown up following Hindi cinema. My previous stint as an actor-model in China helped (she’s done a cameo in a Chinese film too), and I started to explore this genre, which I was not very much into.

PUNJABI CINEMA CONNECTS WELL WITH GLOBAL AUDIENCES

I acted with Kamal Heer in Tera Hero. It was a wonderful experience. Now, I am working in a Bollywood film (untitled), which was shot in Mohali. I am doing another Hindi film, which will go on the floors soon. For a foreigner, with minimal local language skills, it is not easy. I started from regional (Punjabi) which I think is very tough. I am learning the language and nuances of acting here because things are not similar on international, national and regional platforms. In my opinion, Punjabi is the future industry which will capture the film landscape.

INDIA HAS A GREAT WORK CULTURE

Having done movies, ramp shows, fashion weeks, dance reality shows, I feel work culture in India is great. It’s open and especially with the film world, everything is organised. I want to meet Shah Rukh Khan one day!
