Universities, colleges directed not to schedule entertainment program during ‘Martyrdom Week’

Chandigarh, December 28: The Higher Education and Languages Minister, Punjab, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa has directed all the Government-run universities and colleges to not schedule any entertainment program in view the fact that it was during this period that Mata Gujri Ji and 4 Sahibzadas of Dasam Pita Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji attained martyrdom.

The minister said the entire Sikh circles are in mourning these days known as the ‘Martyrdom Week’ and that explains why during the last week of December, celebrations and entertainment programs are not considered appropriate.

In a press communique here today, Mr. Bajwa further added that the elder Sahibzadas of Dasam Pita, Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji attained martyrdom at Chamkaur Sahib fighting against invading mughal hordes and after 2 days, younger Sahibzadas Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji made the supreme sacrifice when they were bricked alive at Sirhind.

Calling the sacrifice of Sahibzadas as unparalleled in the annals of the world, Bajwa said the sentiments of not only the Sikh community but the whole Punjabi community are deeply connected with these sacrifices and that is why the written communications are being sent to the universities and colleges to not hold any entertainment programs in their institutions during the ‘Martyrdom Week’.

On the issue of North Zone Inter University Youth Festival being held at Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, the minister divulged that the university officials have apprised him that the dates of the festival are decided by the Union Government one year in advance.

But still the university officials have been directed to inform the concerned ministries of the Union Government to not schedule any entertainment program during this period.

Bajwa disclosed that the private universities, colleges and other institutions have also been instructed to not hold any entertainment programs during these days.
