Unusually low temperatures of -27 in Calgary bring frostbite warnings

Date:

Calgary, November 9: Even though the snowfall warning in place since Monday has come to an end, Calgarians are dealing with frigid winter conditions.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says just under 10 centimetres of snow fell in the city Monday. Tuesday, Calgary hovered between a high temperature of -15 and a low of -23.

However, the wind chill — blowing at 15km/hr — made it feel closer to -30.

Wednesday is set to be mainly sunny, but fog patches were experienced in the early morning. The high temperature expected to be is of -16, but with the wind blowing at 15 km/h, it would feel like -27 in the morning and -22 in the afternoon.

Tonight, a few clouds are in the forecast. Wind up to 15 km/h. Low at -18, which will feel like -25 with the wind chill.

The weather agency adds there is a risk of frostbite, which can cause permanent damage if not treated right away.

The roads can be very dangerous in heavy snow, with reduced visibility and low surface traction, that’s especially true with icy conditions reported on several streets across the city.

Chris McGeachy, spokesperson for the City of Calgary, says crews are applying abrasives like sand and gravel to improve traction on major roadways.
