Heavy rainfall lashed parts of Punjab, Haryana

Chandigarh, August 6: Heavy rainfall lashed parts of Punjab and Haryana on Monday, pulling the mercury down by a few notches but pouring trouble for farmers in some parts.

Chandigarh recorded 16.6 mm rain since Monday morning.

Heavy rainfall was reported in northern districts of Haryana, including Karnal, Yamunanagar, Kaithal and Kurukshetra. Rainfall in parts of Yamunanagar district in the past 24 hours led to water-logging in low-lying areas of the district, much to the consternation of farmers who have already been battling a swollen Yamuna.

The station at Sadhuara recorded 155 mm of rainfall till 8:30 in the morning.

Officials in the Haryana agriculture department said the rains are good for paddy, sugarcane and other crops, but they could harm vegetables.

Head of agriculture and meteorological department at Charan Singh Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar advised farmers to pump out excess water from their fields to prevent Whitefly attacks on cotton saplings.

In Punjab, Pathankot recorded 66.0 mm rain, Bathinda was at 50.7 mm, and Halwara at 38.9 mm, while Adampur received 2.6 mm of rain and Patiala was at 1.8 mm.

The met department has warned of heavy rains between August 6 and 9.
