Yamunanagar, May 9: People set a truck on fire after it ran over a woman and seriously injured her minor daughter on the Jagadhri-Paonta Sahib national highway in Manakpur village of the district on Wednesday.
The protesters blocked the national highway. The police had to use a mild force to disperse them.
The deceased has been identified as Bindu (35). Her daughter, Komal (12), is under treatment at the PGI, Chandigarh. Bindu worked at a factory in an industrial estate, Manakpur village. Her husband, Shiv Ram, is also works there.
In his police complaint, Shiv Ram said Bindu had gone to drop Komal to school on a bicycle. “When they reached near the gate of the industrial estate, a truck hit the bicycle, killing Bindu on the spot,” he said. Komal was admitted to a local trauma centre, from where she was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh.
Shiv Ram is a native of Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh. For the past few years, he and his family have been living in Udhamgarh village.
After learning about the accident, those working in the industrial estate protested. They threw stones on the truck and damaged its windshields before setting it on fire. The police called a fire tender to douse the flames.
Naveen Saharan, SHO, Sadar police station, Jagadhri, said a case had been registered against the truck driver. About 30 persons have been booked on the charge of setting the truck on fire and blocking the national highway. Those booked by name are Goldi of Mandkheri village, Mohit of Kesarnagar Jagadhri, Kamal of Mandkheri village, Mithun Yadav and Vicky Kamboj, both from Sabapur village.
