Amritsar, September 20: Former Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib Giani Gurmukh Singh said today that the the SGPC’s pressure tactics at the behest of its political bosses were a warning to other Sikh clerics not to revolt.
However, he would not backtrack from his apology over being part of the clergy which took the controversial decision to exonerate the Sirsa dera head in a 2007 blasphemy case.
Recently, power and water supply to his official residence in the Golden Temple complex was snapped so as to evict his family. Though the connection was restored later, sources said the former Jathedar was being pressurised to take back his repentance letter submitted to the sacked Panj Piaras of Akal Takht on September 12 at a Moga gurdwara.
“The reaction of the SGPC was painful as I had spent 22 years in performing service of ‘guru ghar’. Where would I move with my ailing parents and a son who is pursuing studies in Amritsar? I do not even have a one-marla land to accommodate my family. I did what my conscience asked me to do and I have no regrets,” he said.
