1984 Sikh riot-accused appointed CM: PM Modi attacks Kamal Nath at Punjab rally

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday attacked the Congress over the party’s involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and took a jibe at Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath while speaking at a rally in Punjab’s Gurdaspur.

PM Modi on Thursday kick-started his campaign for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Punjab.

Without naming Nath, Modi targeted the newly appointed MP CM saying, “Jinka itihaas hazaron Sikh bhai behno ko berahmi se hatya ka ho aur jo aaj bhi dango ke aaropiyon ko mukhyamantri pad ka puruskar de rahe hain, un logon se Punjab samet desh vasiyon ko satark rehne ki zarurat hai. (Those whose history involves the killings of thousands of Sikhs and those who continue to appoint riot-accused persons as chief ministers of states, Punjab and the entire nation should beware of such people).”

Taking a jibe at former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who was recently convicted in a 1984 riots case, Modi said, “Those who were declared ‘sajjan’ and their case files were closed by a particular family was brought to the book by the NDA government. We formed an SIT and the results are for everyone to see.”

He also hit out at the Congress party over the Kartarpur Corridor, accusing the party of warming up to Pakistan for their political motives.

Modi said in reference to Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu’s Pakistan visit for the Kartarpur Corridor ceremony, Modi said, “Just for their politics, Congress leaders gave a chance to Pakistan. It is surprising that these Congress leaders did not even pay heed to their own Punjab CM.”

PM Modi said like the other states where Congress has come back to power, the situation in Punjab was no different where Congress formed the government by making false promises to farmers in the name of loan waiver.

Modi said that the Congress leaders have themself accepted in the Parliament that during the period of 1.5 year they only waived loans worth Rs 3,400 crore and the poor farmers did not benefit from the loan waiver scheme.

The Prime Minister also said that nation was eager to celebrate 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev and added that the teachings of Guru Nanak will be spread to every corner of the world.

“The decision to go ahead with the Kartarpur corridor was taken keeping in view the faith of crores of Sikhs,” Modi said.
