Phillaur, July 18: The police have busted an inter-district gang involved in abducting and selling children with the arrest of its four members.
DSP Amrik Singh Chahal said the accused had been identified as Naweez, Puran, Sarabjit Kaur and Mahinder Singh, all residents of Ludhiana. Their four accomplices were absconding, he said.
The DSP said a six-month-old boy was kidnapped during a religious fair near the town on July 5 when his toy-seller mother went to take food leaving the child with her three-year-old daughter. When she returned, she found the boy missing. A case under Section 363A IPC was registered.
Chahal said during the interrogation, the accused said Naweez and Nazam had kidnapped the boy and involved Puran and Sarabjit to sell him. Naweez posed as father and Sarabjit the mother of the child and they sold him for Rs 1.5 lakh to Mahinder Singh of Ludhiana. Mahinder Singh with the help of Ranjit Kaur and Harwinder Kaur further sold the child to Birpal Kaur of Lehragaga in Bhatinda for Rs 2 lakh.
