Rs 56 lakh in banned notes recovered in Khanna, 13 held

Ludhiana, October 16: Less than a month after the Khanna Police recovered Rs 68 lakh in banned notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 in the town from four men on September 18, the police again recovered Rs 56.11 lakh in scrapped currency notes on Saturday late during a special checking in two separate cases. The police have also arrested 13 people in connection with the seizure.

In the first incident on Saturday, the police arrested five persons who were sitting in three vehicles parked near Shiv Temple near Khanna military ground and recovered Rs 55.78 lakh in scrapped currency from them. The arrested accused have been were identified as Ajit Kumar of Khanna, Surinder Singh of Ludhiana, Partap Singh of Chandigarh, Gurjit Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib, Pavitar Singh of Khanna and Prinkle Bansal of Manimajra.

In the second case, the police have recovered Rs 33,000 in scrapped currency notes from seven accused. They were sitting in three cars on Samrala road near AS college in Khanna. The accused have been identified as Varinder Kumar of Khanna, Beant Singh and Loveleen Saini of Hoshiarpur, Ram Lubaya, Sanjeev Kumar, Tejinder Singh and Mukhwinder Singh of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr).

Inspector Rajneesh Sood, SHO police station Khanna city said that the accused were businessmen and agriculturists. They were planning with each other to get old notes exchanged with new currency notes.
“We are investigation on how did the police manage to get the scrapped currency notes. We plan to nail the kingpin soon,” said the SHO. A case under Sections 5 and 7 of the Specified Bank Notes Cessation of Liabilities Act, 2017, has been registered against the accused
