Chandigarh, November 3: The Aam Aadmi Party suspended Members of Legislative Assembly Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Kanwar Sandhu from the party on Saturday, months after the two rebelled against its top leadership.
AAP said, in a statement, on Saturday that Bholath MLA Khaira and Sandhu, party legislator from Kharar, had been “consistently indulging in anti-party activities”, and have “continuously attacked central and state leadership”.
AAP replaced Khaira as leader of opposition in Punjab Assembly in July this year, prompting an open rebellion within the party. Khaira, Sandhu and some other lawmakers held a press conference soon after, condemning the decision and asking the party leadership to reconsider it.
Dissident MLAs led by Khaira had been demanding removal of the new office-bearers in the party’s state unit.
Khaira group had also been demanding that the unity talks should be based on resolutions, including one on autonomy of party’s Punjab unit, adopted by the rebels during volunteers’ convention in Bathinda in August.
