Airport must be named after Bhagat Singh: CM

Phillaur, March 1: Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today said the international airport in Mohali must be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh, a national hero. Haryana should have no objection since Bhagat Singh laid his life for the nation, not just for Punjab, he said, while speaking on the sidelines of the passing-out parade at the Punjab Police Academy here.

Speaking about the law and order situation, he said that no one would be allowed to disturb peace in Punjab.

He said several persons had already been held for executing targeted killings. On Maur blast case, he said the probe was at advanced stage and any disclosures at this moment could hamper the proceedings.

The findings would be made public once the case was solved, he addedEarlier, he announced an annual grant of Rs 2 crore for advanced training of police personnel of all ranks in domestic and foreign training centers to empower them to meet the challenges of modern policing.

Addressing a batch of new recruits of 18 Deputy SPs and 494 SIs — the largest group of directly recruited officials in these ranks — the CM expressed pleasure over the fact that more women were now coming forward to join the force (196 in all, including seven DSPs among the probationers).

He also announced a grant of Rs 3 crore for the repair and restoration of the museum, old classrooms and hostels on the premises of the Phillaur Fort, where the academy is located.

The CM presented President’s Police Medal for distinguished services to seven officers, including BK Uppal, Director, Vigilance; Gurpreet Deo, IG; Ranbeer Khatra, DIG; Arun Saini, Additional IG; and Rohit Chaudhry, Additional DG.

In addition, one Police Medal for gallantry and 59 Police Medals for meritorious services were presented. Lok Sabha MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh, DGP Suresh Arora, DGP D Chattopadhya and Director, PPA, Anita Punj were also present on the occasion.
