Amritsar, June 19: The Congress on Monday claimed that a “substantial” number of SAD workers had joined the party in the presence of PPCC chief Sunil Jakhar at Majitha.
Congress’ general secretary Sukhjinder Singh Lalli Majithia said “they were so many that everyone could not be entertained on the dais”.
He claimed that eight sarpanches, 50 panches, two councillors, four former sarpanches and many leading Akali families had come forward to announce their allegiance to the Congress.
Jakhar said the Akalis would have to pay for their “wrongdoings” in Majitha during their 10-year rule.
Meanwhile, former minister Bikram Singh Majithia termed the desertion by Akali workers as “recycling of old material”. He claimed that many had supported the Congress during the last Assembly elections.
