CHANDIGARH, July 26: The Punjab government on Tuesday announced the launch of its flagship Apni Gaddi Apna Rozgar scheme by flagging off over 100 uberMOTO bikes. Under the scheme the state government will be providing commercial two wheelers and four wheelers to unemployed youth at subsidised rates.

Though Uber will be able to operate easily with in Punjab, but it may not have a smooth ride with in the Chandigarh Central Region. Since Haryana is charging a high entry tax on commercial passenger vehicles entering from Chandigarh and Punjab. Uber and Ola- both have taken up the matter with Monahar Lal led BJP government.

Uber is not just betting at affordability, its ready to offer luxury vehicles as well for those who want to spend lavishly.

Largely our focus remains on providing affordable products. Considering the lavish ways of Punjabis we are ready to cater to HNI segment as well. Demands are high for luxury products during the wedding season,” Uber Head-Public Policy, Uber India and South Asia, Shweta Rajpal Kohli told ET. “For Uber India is turning out to be the main innovation centre, we evolve strategies here and later execute them in other South Asian countries as well. uberMOTOhas been successfully running in the Southeast Asian countries of Indonesia and Vietnam, and is especially well-suited for first mile/last mile connectivity, getting people from their homes or offices to metro stations and vice – versa.”

Uber, the ridesharing app that connects riders with drivers, also announced the launch of its bike-sharing product, uberMOTO, in Mohali, Ludhiana, Zirakpurand Kharar in the presence of Manpreet Singh Badal Minister for Finance, Planning and Employment Generation in Punjab.

Punjab Finance and Planning Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, says, “Bike-sharing services like uberMOTO will not only contribute greatly towards improving last-mile connectivity in Punjab and in cutting congestion but also be instrumental in creating thousands of entrepreneurship and economic opportunities for the youth in the state. The ‘Apni Gaddi Apna Rozgar’ scheme will be a game-changer for the youth of Punjab and will play a catalysing role in encouraging micro-entrepreneurship opportunities throughout the state, as promised in our poll manifesto.”

The flag-off follows a meeting held last week between Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh and Shweta Rajpal Kohli, Head-Public Policy, Uber India and South Asia, where both discussed the launch of the bike taxis to boost employment in the state.

uberMOTO claims to make the transportation affordable in these cities, with fares as low as Rs 15.
