Bholath MLA Is AAP Candidate Sukhpal Singh Khaira

Sukhpal Singh Khaira, 51, former Congress MLA, who joined the Aam Aadmi Party last year has won from Bholath. Convener of the party’s RTI cell, he contested from his home turf that he had last won in 2007 after beating Bibi Jagir Kaur of the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Constituency

Bholath is a nagar panchayat in Kapurthala district. It was a the uswn of Raja Bharat, the younger brother of Lord Rama. As of 2001 Census, Bholath had a population of 10,079. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Bholath has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 75% and female literacy of 65%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Political Standing

Sukhpal Singh Khaira is the son of veteran Akali leader and former Punjab education minister Sukhjinder Singh Khaira. In 2007, he was elected as Member of Legislative Assembly from Bholath (2007-2012), District Kapurthala after two failed attempts in 1997 and 2002. In 2009, he was appointed Punjab Congress spokesperson. But he resigned in 2014 from the post, owning moral responsibility for the “poor performance” of the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. In 2015, Khaira announced his resignation from Congress and declared his unification with Aam Aadmi Party and is the new MLA.
