Anandpur Sahib, September 23: The district police have booked eight persons allegedly for blocking Anandpur Sahib-Bunga Sahib road on September 5, here on Friday. The accused included BJP and AAP workers who had staged a protest against the dilapidated condition of the road.
Ironically, the police did not touch Congress leaders who were a part of the agitation. Shiv Sena leader Nitin Nanda, however, alleged that it was a political vendetta as those booked included BJP and AAP workers and no one from the Congress
On September 5, hundreds of people from Agampur and other villages had blocked the traffic at different spots on the road, claiming that the big potholes were causing accidents and posing a risk to their lives. They said the road had not been repaired for long, despite repeated pleas.
Later, tehsildar Surinderpal Singh and DSP Ravinder Singh Kahlon assured that the repair work would be started soon, following which the protesters had lifted the blockade after three hours.
Nanda, while addressing the media office in Agampur, said though the agitation was non-political, the action taken by the police was biased. He said several persons belonging to the Opposition parties had been booked, but the police did not touch Congress leaders who were a part of the agitation.
Ropar SSP Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu said a case under Section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 288 (Obstruction in public way) of the IPC had been registered against the accused. He said he would probe the matter regarding the allegations by Opposition parties.
