Phagwara, April 6: Former Akali MLA and BJP leader Chaudhary Mohan Lal Banga on Thursday joined the Bahujan Samaj Party. He is the elder son of BJP leader Swarna Ram. The announcement was made by Banga at a press conference here.

Block Samiti chairman Balwinder Ram, Block Samiti member Jaswinder Kaur, former sarpanch of Mehliana village Surinder Singh also joined the BSP with Banga.

BSP’s Punjab unit incharge Meghraj and other leaders welcomed them into the party.

Banga, who was initially with the BSP, said he was upset with Narendra Modi government’s “anti-poor and anti-Dalit policies”.

He alleged that the dilution of the SC/ST Act at the “behest of the Modi government” proved to be the last straw.Banga was elected Sarpanch of Behram village in 1993.

Then, he became Zila Parishad member in 1994 and was elected Akali Dal MLA from Banga Assembly constituency in 1997 and 2007.His father Chaudhary Swarna Ram, a BJP leader and former Punjab minister, represented Phagwara seat in 1997 and 2007.

The seat was wrested from Swarna Ram by BJP leader Som Parkash who is representing it now for the second time.

Banga had quit as a member of the Punjab Public Service Commission in October 2015 in protest against the sacrilege incidents in Punjab.

He then joined the BJP and was a contender for the party ticket from Phagwara ahead of the Assembly elections last year.
