Chandigarh, March 11: Punjab Sports Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi and Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Mrs. Aruna Chaudhary today congratulated boxer Simranjit Kaur for qualifying for Tokyo Olympic Games-2020.
The only and first woman boxer from Punjab, selected in the Indian team, now will represent India at the Tokyo Olympics.
In a press communiqué issued here, Rana Sodhi said that Simranjit Kaur Bath has leap forward the valiant spirit of Punjabis in Indian boxing by securing a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics in the quarterfinals after defeating second seed Mongolian pugilist with unanimous verdict win 5:0 to storm into Semis (60kg) of Asia/Oceania Qualifier.
She also won the semi-final bout. Extending his wishes for preparation of Olympic Games, Rana Sodhi expressed hope that Simar would bring laurels for the state and country as well.
Mrs. Aruna Chaudhury, while congratulating Simar Chakar for her historic achievement, said that she has burnished the name of Punjabi girls at international level, for which the people of the state proud her.
The 24-year-old boxer, known as Simer Chakar, is from Chakar village in Ludhiana district. She started her boxing career in 2008 at Sher-e-Punjab Sports Academy of the village and won bronze medal in the World Boxing Championship held in Delhi in 2018.
