Amritsar, March 16: The BSF’s 88 Battalion today seized 11 packets of heroin from the Ramkot border outpost in the Amritsar sector. However, taking advantage of the fully grown wheat in fields, at least two Pakistani smugglers escaped.

The recovered contraband is worth Rs 55 crore in the international market. The DIG, Border Security Force, Amritsar, JS Oberoi, said on the interning night of March 14 and 15, BSF troops noticed some suspected activity just 200 metres away from the Indo-Pak border near Ramkot post.

“At around 2.25 am, the troops found one or two Pakistani smugglers trying to push the contraband through a plastic pipe on this side of the border fence. The BSF men opened fire and thwarted their attempt, but the Pak smugglers managed to escape taking advantage of darkness, undulated ground and wheat crop.

Later, during search, 11 packets, weighing 1 kg each of the contraband, suspected to be heroin, and one plastic pipe were seized from the spot,” he said.Oberoi said a flag meeting was done with the Pakistani counterparts soon after the recovery. “We gave them ample evidence, including the entry and exit of footprints towards the border fence. The Pak Rangers assured us of investigating the matter,” he said.
