Shahkot byelection: Nominations by May 10

Chandigarh, May 3: The notification regarding the Shahkot byelection will be issued on Thursday. After the notification, the nomination process will also start immediately.

Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, Dr S Karuna Raju said the notification would be issued on May 3 and the nomination process would start immediately after that. The last date of submission of nomination papers would be May 10. Due to a holiday on May 6, under the Negotiable Instrument Act-1881, nomination papers would not be submitted on that day.

He said the scrutiny of papers would be done on May 11 and the last date for the withdrawal of the nomination papers would be May 14.

A spokesperson for the Election Office said due to holidays on May 12 and 13, under the Negotiable Instrument Act-1881, there would be no withdrawal of candidature on those days. He said the polling would be held on May 28 and the counting of votes would be done on May 31. The result would be declared the same day. He said the poll process would be completed on June 2.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday announced to contest the bypoll. Party co-convener Dr Balbir Singh and Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Khaira made the announcement here. The party is likely to announce the candidate on May 5 when Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia would be visiting the state for the first time after his appointment as incharge of the party’s political affairs in Punjab.

Dr Balbir Singh said party volunteers from the Assembly constituency would select the candidate.
