Chandigarh, August 2: Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Tuesday hit out at the Capt Amarinder Singh-led Congress government in Punjab for its “bogus claims” about breaking the drug trade chain in the state.

Khaira said Congress MLA Surjit Singh Dhiman’s statement at a function at Sunam on availability of drugs in every street of the state and their hassle-free supply proves the stand taken by his party from time to time. “The cat is now out of the bag and all the CM’s claims about weeding out drugs from the state have fallen flat,” he said.

Khaira added that the Congress MLA was not a common man but an elected leader and must be taken seriously.

“The ground reality is that every drug is available in Punjab but on higher rates than previously. Even the CM himself had a few days ago said that the cost of heroin, which was 1,500 per gram earlier, has now gone up to Rs 5,000. He did not say anything about discontinuing the supply of drugs,” he said.

Khaira said the Capt Amarinder must reveal the names of drug traders who he claims have fled the state after the formation of the Congress government in the state. He said registering cases against petty drug consumers is not the solution, but there was need to tame the big players in the trade.
