New Delhi, February 8: Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today met AICC president Rahul Gandhi and discussed party reorganisation in the state to prepare in advance for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
A major revamp at the district Congress level is on the cards with the party gearing for a big fight.
Amarinder also discussed with Rahul the possibility of holding the AICC plenary in Mohali though no final decision has yet been taken on the matter. Present also in the meeting were Sunil Jakhar, Punjab Congress chief and AICC incharge of Punjab affairs Asha Kumari.
State Cabinet expansion discussions were deferred until later with Amarinder saying these will be taken up once the Ludhiana MC elections conclude.
Today’s discussion centered around revamping of the PPCC organisational structure in order to strengthen the Punjab unit of the party and prepare it better for next year’s parliamentary elections, a party release said. A tentative AICC plenary schedule is March-April.
At today’s meeting, a delegation of five ex-servicemen led by Subedar Bir Singh Chauhan (retd) also accompanied the Chief Minsiter to meet Rahul.
These ex-servicemen, who hail from different parts of the country, had quit the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ahead of the Punjab elections and had campaigned for Amarinder in Patiala along with the suspended Delhi AAP MLA Maj Devinder Shekhawat.
They expressed the desire to join the Congress, which was welcomed by Rahul and Amarinder.
